Electronic bracelets for suspects may become a widespread practice in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan plans to introduce a system of electronic bracelets for suspects throughout the country. A pilot project in the capital has already shown effectiveness, replacing detention with house arrest with monitoring.
Kazakhstan is considering introducing a system of monitoring suspects with electronic bracelets throughout the country. This initiative came after a successful pilot project launched in the capital in April at the initiative of the Supreme Court.
According to statistics, about 11,000 people are arrested in Kazakhstan before trial every year. In recent years, the number of applications by investigative bodies to authorise the detention of suspects for serious and especially serious crimes has increased by 30%.
Within the framework of a pilot project, the investigative court refused to authorise the detention of 26 suspects. Instead, a preventive measure in the form of house arrest with the installation of electronic bracelets was chosen. This approach makes it possible to monitor the whereabouts of suspects and ensure their compliance with the conditions of arrest without placing them in prison.
The main use of electronic tracking devices was observed in cases investigated by the Anti-Corruption Service - 14 cases. Electronic bracelets were also used by the Police Department - 10 cases and the Department of Economic Investigation - 2 cases.
Electronic bracelets are an effective tool for monitoring suspects, reducing the burden on the prison system and providing more humane conditions for those awaiting trial. If successfully implemented throughout the country, this measure could significantly change the justice system in Kazakhstan.
