Diplomat Saken Mamash's wife reveals shocking details of domestic violence
Karina Mamash, wife of Kazakh diplomat Saken Mamash, has spoken out about years of domestic violence.
Saken Mamash's wife, Karina, shared horrifying details of prolonged abuse in her family. She is currently in a crisis centre in Astana with her children, sister and mother. The most recent beating, which left Karina with severe head injuries, resulted in vision problems and bruises. Karina said that only her closest friends knew about the violence, and she hid everything to her relatives. According to her, her husband's aggression started from the first days of their life together, especially when he consumed alcohol.
Karina admitted that for a long time she lived in fear, not seeking help, even when some of her husband's relatives knew about the violence and helped her to get medical help, controlling her not to give anything away. She threatened her husband with disclosure of dirt on social media, to which he only laughed and brushed off the threats.
The situation escalated when Karina reported years of abuse on social media on 6 May, after another incident when her husband beat not only her but also her sister. In response, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs urgently recalled Saken Mamash. Anna Ryl, head of the Korgau Astana Foundation, noted that wives of diplomats are often economically dependent on their spouses, which exacerbates their situation abroad.
