Danish Defense Minister: Trump Will Not Be Able to Implement His Greenland Plan
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that Donald Trump's proposal to acquire Greenland is unrealistic. He emphasized that the island’s future is determined by its residents, not external forces.

Poulsen noted that Denmark considers Greenland an integral part of its kingdom and respects its people's right to self-determination. According to him, any changes in the island's status can only occur by the will of the Greenlandic population.
Trump’s statements about the possible annexation of Greenland by the U.S. have drawn criticism in Copenhagen. Danish authorities reminded that similar proposals have been made in the past but have always been rejected. Denmark also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its position in the Arctic region, as well as developing the island's infrastructure and defense capabilities.
In response to the situation, Denmark plans to expand its military presence in the Arctic. Security measures will be strengthened, including the modernization of military equipment, increased patrolling, and investments in Greenland’s strategic facilities.
Trump himself stated that his proposal was based on supporting the Greenlanders’ right to self-determination. He expressed readiness to welcome the island into the U.S., promising prosperity and security for its residents in case of annexation. However, the statement received little support in both Greenland and Denmark.
Experts note that U.S. interest in Greenland is linked to its strategic location and natural resources. The island plays a crucial role in Arctic geopolitics, and Washington views it as a key element of its regional security strategy.
