Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, commented on US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's remarks about Washington's plans to expand sanctions against China for alleged supplies of dual-use products to Russia. Pengyu noted that economic relations between Beijing and Moscow are in line with market principles, and China rejects illegal unilateral US sanctions.

Pengyu emphasised that China's position on Ukraine is fair and objective, and Beijing is actively working to promote peace talks. The diplomat assured that China will take measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its firms and called on the US to correct its mistakes and stop the pressure.

Liu Pengyu called trade relations between China and Russia "healthy and in line with WTO norms and market principles". Earlier, on 16 May, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping met in Beijing and adopted a joint statement on deepening strategic partnership and cooperation.

Amid intensifying U.S. sanctions pressure on China, Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokeswoman He Yadong said China is against U.S. abuse of export controls. Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C., also condemned the U.S. action, calling it economic intimidation and an abuse of state power.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the US is ready to increase pressure on China if the PRC does not stop deepening defence cooperation with Russia. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed that China has the right to co-operate with Russia in economy and trade.

On 23 February, the US imposed new sanctions that affected firms from China, Vietnam, Germany and other countries. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said that China considers the imposition of sanctions against Chinese companies unacceptable.

China continues to defend its economic interests and opposes US sanctions pressure. Beijing calls on Washington to reconsider its policy and stop unilateral actions that damage international trade and economic relations.
