The British authorities are speeding up the process of transferring the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia Island, to Mauritius. A strategically important British-American military base is located on the archipelago, which makes this step extremely sensitive for geopolitics.

The initiative is actively supported by the administration of the current US President Joe Biden. However, the team of Donald Trump, who will soon return to the White House, is critical of this step, fearing the loss of strategic control.

Representatives of the Conservative Party of Great Britain also oppose the transfer. They believe that this move could strengthen the influence of China, which has close ties with Mauritius.

Negotiations became more complicated after the change of government in Mauritius in November 2024. The new authorities have put forward additional requirements, which creates a risk of delays. However, Britain intends to complete the process before Trump's inauguration in January 2025 in order to avoid possible complications from the new US administration.

The situation around Chagos remains tense, underscoring its strategic importance in global politics.
