Asteroid 2024 YR4 Poses a 3.1 Percent Impact Risk with Earth in 2032

Asteroid 2024 YR4 is currently the most dangerous object ever recorded. It has a 3.1 percent chance of colliding with Earth in 2032 making it the highest-risk candidate for a catastrophic impact. With a size comparable to a football field it could release up to 7.8 megatons of energy equivalent to 520 Hiroshima atomic bombs

Discovered in late 2024 asteroid 2024 YR4 has already raised serious concerns among astronomers. Initially its impact probability was estimated at 0.1 percent but new calculations have increased this risk to 3.1 percent. This is the highest recorded risk level among all potentially hazardous asteroids ever observed

According to scientists the asteroid has a diameter between 40 and 90 meters roughly the size of a football field. If it were to hit Earth it could release up to 7.8 megatons of energy an amount equivalent to 520 Hiroshima atomic bombs. Such an impact could completely destroy a large city causing firestorms shockwaves and seismic disturbances

Current trajectory predictions suggest that the asteroid could enter Earth’s atmosphere in December 2032. The potential impact zone stretches from South America through Africa to South Asia. Major cities at risk include Bogotá Lagos Mumbai and Chennai with a total population exceeding 100 million people

At present astronomers are closely monitoring the asteroid. In March 2025 the James Webb Space Telescope will conduct additional observations to refine estimates of its size trajectory and composition. These data will help determine the precise impact probability and potential mitigation strategies

If the risk remains high the international community may take action to deflect the asteroid. Possible methods include kinetic impact gravity tractors and even nuclear explosions in space. In 2022 NASA’s DART mission successfully altered the trajectory of asteroid Dimorphos demonstrating the feasibility of planetary defense against such threats

However many uncertainties remain. Even small changes in 2024 YR4’s orbit could either decrease or increase the likelihood of impact. Scientists will continue to track its path and new data in the coming years will either confirm or rule out the danger

If the asteroid is indeed on a collision course humanity will face an urgent need to develop protective measures. International agencies are already discussing joint programs to counter the asteroid threat as time for preparation is running out. December 2032 could become a defining moment if humanity fails to act in time
