Artificial Glaciers in Kyrgyzstan Store 1.5 Million Cubic Meters of Water
Seven ice towers built in the south of the country will provide water for agriculture in summer 2025.
In southern Kyrgyzstan, the first winter cycle of artificial glaciers—created at the end of 2024—has been successfully completed. During the cold season, seven such structures accumulated over 1.5 million cubic meters of ice, which will serve as a water source for irrigation and livestock in summer.
The glaciers are ice towers up to 50 meters tall, formed in winter by spraying water into freezing air. As the water freezes, it gradually builds a massive structure. In spring and summer, as they melt, these towers become a stable and predictable water source.
A single artificial glacier can meet the needs of 300 to 500 hectares of land, including irrigated fields, pastures, and farms.
The project aims to mitigate the effects of climate change, water shortages, and glacial retreat in Central Asia. Amid worsening water balance and growing agricultural demand, artificial glaciers offer an effective solution for seasonal water supply.
Experts consider Kyrgyzstan’s experience a promising model for other mountainous regions. Similar projects have previously been implemented in India, Tajikistan, and China, but this is the first time the technology has been deployed on such a large scale in Kyrgyzstan.
