Ar-Rahman Mosque in Pyongyang: a rarity for North Korea
Photo taken from public sources

The Ar-Rahman Mosque in Pyongyang is a unique facility for North Korea (DPRK), where Islam is practically not widespread. The majority of the local population professes Buddhism or Christianity, and Muslims, if present, make up an extremely small proportion. Interestingly, the mosque is used exclusively by diplomats from Muslim countries such as Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, Pakistan and Syria. These States have their embassies in Pyongyang, and Ar-Rahman serves as a place of prayer for their employees. This fact highlights the rarity and specificity of the existence of Islamic sites in a country with a strict state policy regarding religion. The mosque is not only a religious place, but also a kind of symbol of the diplomatic presence of Muslim countries in North Korea.
