Antibiotics stop working: a global medical threat
Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is rapidly increasing, putting millions of lives at risk around the world. Projections for 2050 warn of a possible 39 million deaths caused by antibiotic-resistant infections. 35,000 people are already dying in the EU every year, and the shortage of new drugs only exacerbates the problem.
According to Bild, bacterial resistance to antibiotics is becoming one of the biggest threats to global health. According to forecasts, by 2050, more than 39 million people may die from infections caused by resistant microorganisms. Already, 35,000 people die annually in the European Union from infections associated with resistant pathogens. The situation is complicated by the fact that only 12 new antibiotics have been approved in recent years, which is critically insufficient to combat the growing threat.
