Amsterdam Mayor: the incident with Israeli fans was not a pogrom
Femke Halsema said that events involving Israeli fans and Moroccans should not be called a pogrom, noting the use of the term in Israeli propaganda.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, in an interview with Dutch television, commented on the incident during which Israeli Maccabi Tel Aviv fans clashed with Moroccans. She stressed that she did not consider the incident a pogrom.: "Looking back, I would not have used the word "pogrom" to describe what happened that evening," Halsema said. The mayor noted that the term "pogrom" has become part of Israeli propaganda aimed at discrediting the Moroccan minority in Amsterdam and encouraging discrimination.: "The Israeli government is talking about the "pogrom" that the Palestinians staged on the streets of Amsterdam, but this is far from the truth. They use this to discredit the Moroccan minority in Amsterdam and encourage discrimination. I can't agree with that." Earlier, on November 7, 2024, after the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv, clashes occurred in Amsterdam, as a result of which Israeli fans were injured. The police detained more than 60 people, and the incident caused a wide public outcry.
