US May Halt Military Support to Egypt
Reasons for Policy Review
Washington provides Egypt with approximately $1.3 billion annually in military aid, funding US-made military equipment purchases, training for Egyptian troops, and defense infrastructure support.
However, the review of this aid program is driven by Cairo’s opposition to Trump’s proposal regarding the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. Egypt, which has traditionally supported diplomatic resolutions, rejected the initiative, straining relations between the two countries.
Impact of Aid Reduction
The US and Egypt have maintained decades-long military cooperation, with Bright Star exercises being a key aspect of their partnership. These multinational drills enhance combat readiness, experience exchange, and strategic ties between the two nations.
Additionally, in 2024, the US State Department approved $5.35 billion in arms sales to Egypt. Last month, Washington also authorized two separate arms deliveries worth $929 million.
If aid reduction is implemented, Egypt’s military capabilities and its ability to procure US weapons may be affected.
Political Consequences
Egypt has long been a key US ally in the Middle East. However, cutting military support could alter the regional balance of power, prompting Cairo to seek alternative partnerships.
Analysts suggest that Egypt may strengthen its defense cooperation with Russia and China to offset potential losses from reduced US assistance.
