“They were looking to create a new currency. Maybe they wanted to use the yuan. The first thing I said: Any BRICS country that mentions the destruction of the dollar will be hit with 150% tariffs,” Trump stated.
BRICS and the Idea of an Alternative Currency
BRICS countries have previously explored the possibility of a common currency to facilitate trade among member nations while reducing dependence on the U.S. dollar.
However, Brazilian officials recently dismissed the idea, stating that it never advanced beyond initial discussions.
Despite this, Trump continues to threaten economic retaliation, insisting that any attempt to undermine the dollar will result in severe trade sanctions.
Brazil’s Response: Lula da Silva Pushes Back
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded strongly to Trump’s threats, stating that Brazil would adjust to any new U.S. tariffs and calling Trump’s approach imperialistic.
"Trump is trying to become the emperor of the world," Lula da Silva remarked.
Earlier, Trump had warned of 100% tariffs on BRICS nations for reducing their reliance on the dollar. However, his latest statement significantly raises the stakes.

If Trump follows through with his 150% tariffs, it could trigger:
