What Happened?

During his speech, Ischinger declared that Trump’s America now lives in a different reality and that Europe and the U.S. no longer understand each other – for the first time since World War II.

His reaction was triggered by a blunt statement from U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who made it clear that the United States is stepping away from guaranteeing Europe’s security.

"America is leaving. Europe must solve its own problems. You, Europeans, played a role in starting the war in Ukraine, and now we are left to clean up the mess," Vance said.

Following these words, Ischinger’s voice broke, and he stepped away from the podium, descending into the audience to a standing ovation. Before leaving, he simply stated:

"This is Europe's nightmare day."
