SAMK Declares Quadrupedalism Officially Haram
Arguments from Sharia
-
Human Dignity.
SAMK references Quranic verses stating that equating humans with animals is seen as degrading. Behaviors that diminish human dignity are considered impermissible in Islam. -
Prohibition of Imitation.
“Even simple imitation of a woman by a man or a man by a woman is prohibited in Sharia. Walking on all fours, imitating animals, represents an even more extreme form of behavior that contradicts religious principles,” SAMK explained.
Exceptions to the Ban
SAMK clarified that the following do not fall under the definition of quadrupedalism:
- Comparisons of literary or fairy-tale characters with animals (e.g., “as clever as a fox”).
- Theatrical performances or children’s games where animal roles are used for educational or entertainment purposes.
Such activities, according to religious teachings, do not degrade human dignity and are therefore not considered haram.
Impact of the Fatwa
The decision to declare quadrupedalism haram highlights the importance of adhering to norms that uphold human dignity in Islam. It also sets cultural and religious guidelines, emphasizing the boundaries of acceptable behavior for Muslims in their daily lives.
