Lessons from Ukraine: Kazakhstan’s Balanced Policy Amid Geopolitical Instability
The latest developments in Ukraine-US relations underscore the importance of an independent and balanced foreign policy for post-Soviet nations. Throughout the conflict, Kazakhstan has demonstrated a measured approach, focusing solely on national interests and international norms.
Three years ago, at the onset of the armed confrontation, there were calls in Kazakhstan for radical decisions. Nationalist and liberal groups pushed for a harsher stance, but the president maintained strategic restraint. This approach allowed Kazakhstan to avoid the severe crises that Ukraine has faced.
Kazakhstan’s president has consistently upheld the country’s sovereignty and neutrality, while strictly adhering to international law. Despite external pressure, Kazakhstan did not recognize the self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (LPR and DPR), reaffirming its commitment to the UN Charter.
The conflict in Eastern Europe has reached a stalemate. EU leaders, who anticipated Russia’s military defeat, underestimated its capabilities. Even before Trump’s victory, the Kazakh president warned world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, about the futility of military confrontation.
Today, Ukraine is experiencing the severe consequences of war. Territorial losses, massive demographic and economic setbacks, and millions of refugees have placed the country in a critical situation. A potential agreement with the US on transferring natural resources poses an additional threat, as it does not guarantee Ukraine’s security but may lead to the loss of sovereignty over key economic assets.
From the beginning of the conflict, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev supported diplomatic resolutions, including the Istanbul agreements, which provided a more flexible peace settlement. However, this path was rejected, leading to a prolonged crisis.
Today, it is clear that Kazakhstan follows a cautious and independent foreign policy, relying on its own resources and diplomatic strategies. The country maintains balanced relations with key partners and avoids being drawn into confrontational scenarios.
In this conflict, Kazakhstan’s sole priority is its national interests and the well-being of its people. The ongoing situation in Ukraine serves as a reminder of the importance of pragmatic foreign policy, grounded in national security, stability, and adherence to international law.
