On January 21, 2025, David Balland and his wife were forcibly taken from their home in the Cher department. The kidnappers held them in an undisclosed location, demanding payment in cryptocurrency. To increase pressure, they sent a video with threats to another Ledger co-founder.
Rescue Operation and Arrests
On January 22, French police, including the GIGN special forces unit, launched a rescue mission. Balland and his wife were freed, and 10 suspects were arrested. They have been charged with armed kidnapping, torture, and extortion. If convicted, they face life imprisonment.
