One of the most devastating floods in recent years has struck the Australian state of Queensland. According to preliminary estimates from authorities and farming associations, more than 100,000 cattle and sheep have died or gone missing.

Floodwaters have inundated vast grazing lands, destroyed feed supplies, and cut off access to remote farms. Significant damage has also been reported to roads, bridges, and power lines, severely impacting regional infrastructure.

Farmers are reporting catastrophic losses — many have lost their entire herds, and recovery is expected to take months or even years. Beyond direct damages, meat and dairy prices are likely to rise, along with disruptions in the supply of feed and veterinary products.

The state government has declared a state of emergency and deployed rescue teams, military units, and volunteers to the affected areas. Emergency support programs for agricultural producers have also been launched.

The flood serves as yet another reminder of increasing climate instability and the vulnerability of the agricultural sector to extreme weather events.
