What Did Terras Say?

The MEP believes that Trump is easing pressure on Russia, which benefits Moscow:

"Trump’s debut was a masterclass in shortsightedness. The Russian economy is suffering, but now the U.S. president himself has extended a helping hand."

He insists that the EU must respond firmly:

"What’s the next step? Europe must support Zelensky even more decisively and, if necessary, impose sanctions on the U.S. Trump, like Putin, only understands the language of force."

What Could Be the Consequences?

  1. A Diplomatic Crisis Between the EU and the U.S. – The EU has never sanctioned a sitting U.S. president, and such a move could trigger a political standoff.
  2. A Split Within Europe – Countries like Hungary, Slovakia, and France may oppose such drastic measures.
  3. Washington’s Retaliation – Trump could reassess U.S.-EU economic ties and impose stricter trade policies.

How Is Europe Reacting?

While Terras’ proposal has not gained widespread support, the mere discussion of sanctions against a U.S. ally highlights the growing tensions between Europe and Washington.

If pressure on Trump increases, it could reshape U.S. policy on Ukraine and impact European security strategies.
