According to The Globe and Mail, Canada is contemplating canceling the deal for the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the USA. This decision is being discussed against the backdrop of deteriorating foreign policy relations between the two countries, as well as based on comments from Michael Byers, co-director of the Space Institute. Byers expresses concerns about Canada’s inability to have full control over the aircraft, as the American company Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35, has refused to transfer the source code to foreign customers, including even close U.S. allies.

This issue has gained importance in light of Donald Trump’s foreign policy, which, according to critics, negatively impacted relations with traditional U.S. allies. Canada, despite its close ties with America, seeks more independence on issues related to national security and control over military equipment.

Canceling the purchase of F-35s could have a serious impact on military cooperation between Canada and the U.S., as well as on the overall defense capability of both countries, given the importance of these jets for modern aerial warfare. In the event of a cancellation, Canada may seek other options to replace its outdated aircraft while remaining part of the North Atlantic Alliance's collective defense system.
