Britain Urges Zelensky to Apologize to Trump to Maintain U.S. Support
British authorities recognize that the conflict between Zelensky and Trump could negatively impact Ukraine’s future cooperation with Washington. London is concerned about the possible consequences of a breakdown in relations between Kyiv and the new U.S. administration, as this could lead to a reduction in military aid, significantly weakening Ukraine’s position in the ongoing conflict. This is why British officials are urging Zelensky to do "everything possible" to normalize relations with Trump and his inner circle.
Disagreements between Trump and Zelensky began after their tense meeting in late February, which ended in a public dispute. Zelensky left the White House prematurely, and the planned agreement on mineral extraction was never signed. This angered Trump’s allies, who began openly criticizing Zelensky, accusing him of not showing enough gratitude for the support Ukraine had received.
Following this meeting, Republicans began hinting that Zelensky should consider negotiations with Russia, with some even discussing the possibility of replacing Ukraine’s leadership. House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed the opinion that if Zelensky is unwilling to make concessions, Ukraine should consider a new leader who could ensure a compromise resolution to the conflict.
As one of Ukraine’s key allies, the UK fears that strained relations between Kyiv and Washington could undermine Western unity in supporting Ukraine. London acknowledges that without U.S. assistance, Ukraine would face severe challenges, as European countries alone cannot compensate for the missing financial and military aid.
The British government is urging Zelensky to avoid further escalation of tensions with Trump and his associates. London believes that Ukraine must act pragmatically, considering political realities and demonstrating diplomatic flexibility in its relations with the new U.S. administration.
It remains unclear how Zelensky will respond to these recommendations. However, it is evident that failing to restore relations with Washington could have serious consequences for Ukraine. If the White House does decide to reduce military and financial support for Kyiv, it would inevitably weaken Ukraine’s position and shift the balance of power in the conflict.
The situation remains tense, and further diplomatic contacts between London, Washington, and Kyiv are expected in the coming weeks. The UK insists that Zelensky must adapt to the changing circumstances and find a way to maintain U.S. support, or else Ukraine risks losing one of its most important allies.
